1 Student at a Time (1ST) student-led mutual aid fund

Tuesday, August 11th, 2020

1 Student at a Time (1ST) is a student-led organization whose mission is to support college students, particularly those in greatest need. 1ST was founded in May 2020 by a group of students and faculty at UCLA to address humanitarian crises amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically focusing on housing, health, higher education, and food security.

1ST is initiating a student-led mutual aid fund as a communal financial resource for UCLA students experiencing hardships due to COVID-19. The funds will be raised through a grassroots campaign by classmates, alumni, faculty, and other members of our community. We are a resource for covering expenses that cannot be met by other sources provided by UCLA. For information regarding our fundraising and redistribution process, please refer to this document. Virtual Volunteer, Internship, and Career Opportunities with CALPIRG Students

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

CALPIRG Students is our student-run organization that advocates for the interests of the public and students. During this time of social distancing, we have remote volunteer

opportunities and internships available to help people in need, protect public health and

the environment, and keep our community civically engaged. We are also hiring seniors

for full-time positions after graduation. Fill out this interest form if you want to get involved or learn more about these opportunities.

For over 45 years, we’ve worked to protect our environment and fight climate change, address

food insecurity, and help students vote. We believe students have the power to shape the future, and we organize on UC campuses and statewide to win real, concrete victories.

Just last week, we won the American Climate Leadership award for our work in getting our UC’s to commit to 100% clean electricity by 2025! The reason why we are so effective on these issues is because we represent thousands of students here at UCLA and tens of thousands of students across the UC system who have pledged CALPIRG.

We are the largest and most diverse generation alive and we have the power to elect the next generation of leaders who will fight for our vision for the future. This Spring, we are working to turn out the youth vote in the 2020 elections by asking students to pledge to vote, working with administration, and building a huge coalition of groups on campus committed to turning out the vote.

We’re also continuing our work to protect our oceans from single-use plastics and to make textbooks more affordable for students, as well as working to ensure students basic needs are being met in light of COVID19 and calling on the federal government to expand medical resources.

There’s still so much we can do to make a positive difference, work with a fun team, and

learn awesome social change skills this quarter. If you want to make change with us, fill

out the interest form here.
