Call for Artists – RipRap

Friday, February 22nd, 2019

RipRap is a literary journal designed and produced annually since 1951 by students in the Master of Fine Arts, Creative Writing program at California State University Long Beach (CSULB). RipRap offers a humble invitation to talented and aspiring writers of short fiction, creative nonfiction, flash fiction, and poetry, as well as creators of visual art such as photography, illustration, and comics. New editions of the journal are published each May, including interviews with award winning, published writers who are featured in the CSULB English Department’s Visiting Writers Series or from the known writing community.

This year, RipRap 41 will highlight multitude and diversity in all forms, celebrating the uniqueness of culture, race, sexuality, gender, place, and perspective. We encourage local and global submissions of writing and art inspired by the kaleidoscopic composition of Southern California, the greater US, and abroad. As always with all our submissions, we seek out work that is innovative, forward-thinking, and as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.

Submissions for the artwork category for Volume 41 have been reopened until March 15th.

Submit artwork (without any identifying information on the files themselves) here: https://riprapliteraryjournal.submittable.com/submit

Summer Seminar “Inside Arts”

Friday, February 15th, 2019

The documenta in Kassel is one of the most important and well known modern arts exhibitions in the world. Since the beginning in 1953, it has grown continuously and can be experienced not only in museums and art halls but also in many places throughout the city, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. In fact, in 2017 more than one million visitors came to North Hesse. The University of Kassel offers interested students and graduates, especially from the areas of Fine Arts, Cultural Sciences and also Economics, the chance to get involved with the theory and practice of documenta and to learn about its history up to now. “Inside Arts” offers insight in how to curate an exhibition of this dimension – from pre-planning to the management of the documenta, including international marketing.

We will visit the documenta Archive, art galleries and museums exhibiting documenta art. In addition, 2019 is the year of the Bauhaus centennial, which will be celebrated with the Kassel exhibition Bauhaus / documenta. Vision und Marke (vision and brands) which allows us to discuss these two concepts together with the organisers of the exhibition. The course finishes with the Berlin trip. In the capital, we will experience street art, which Berlin is famous for, including the East Side Gallery – the longest remaining part of the Berlin wall painted with graffiti art. Famous art museums like the Nationalgalerie / Museum Island, the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart (Museum of Contemporary Art), or the Gemäldegalerie with masterpieces from the Middle Ages to Baroque will also be a part of the trip.

After the Berlin tour, you can continue with a seminar in Venice at the University Ca‘ Foscari on the topic of the Venice arts exhibition “Biennale”.
