InVisible Culture, Issue 28 CFP

For its twenty-eighth issue, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture invites scholarly articles and creative works that address the complex and multiple meanings of contending with crisis.

Defined by the global uncertainty of a world afflicted by varied and ambiguously interrelated states of emergency, the present can be seen as a critical historical conjuncture characterized by crisis. In the context of its worldwide occurrence, crisis refers irreducibly to a multitude of circumstances, events, and thematizations: military conflict, debt crises, issues of political representation, the mass migration and displacement of refugees, increasing ecological disruptions. Such ruptures in the social demand constant attention from individuals and communities, constituting a need for committed artistic and scholarly engagements with questions of what it means to be in crisis and how to deal with it.

2017 MFA National Competition

One Bus, One Cause volunteers visit unique Community Partner sites to learn about various causes and organizations and complete vital service work. Exhibition opportunity

I would like to pass along an exhibition opportunity for current UCLA students and alumni of the Art Department, specifically those working in video/film. AOPO is a collective of artists and curators seeking to connect contemporary art on both sides of the country through grassroots curatorial projects and publications. Call for artists: Jazz Reggae Festival

The Jazz Reggae Festival committee is seeking artist submissions to do live art at the festival this year! The festival is over the Memorial Day weekend on 5/29/17, and the following perks are included for selected visual artists: a festival pass plus one, option to sell merchandise (clothing, art pieces, basically anything that they make), as well as meals for the day. Additionally, we are in the process of obtaining donated paint.

Fellows of Contemporary Art: Open Call for curatorial submissions from “emerging curators” for its Curators Laboratory program

Fellows of Contemporary Art is pleased to offer an Open Call for curatorial submissions from “emerging curators” for its Curators Laboratory program.   FOCA is now publicly requesting proposals for its 2018 season of exhibitions. We are seeking engaging curatorial concepts that will be presented at the FOCA Chinatown exhibition space in January, May and August of 2018.

Fellows of Contemporary Art is an independent, non-profit art organization that collaborates with the art community at large and nurtures the expression of creative freedom in support of contemporary California art and artists.

The latest chapter in our ongoing support for California art and artists is the Curators Laboratory, an ongoing series of exhibitions at FOCA’s exhibition space.  Since our initial Curators Lab exhibition, “Stoneface” in 2007, more than ninety emerging or established artists have been featured in twenty-three exhibitions.  Each project involves public events and some form of documentation.

More information about Curators Lab projects can be found at http://focala.org/curators-lab/.  All proposals must be received by email by June 16, 2017 and will be reviewed by the Curators Lab Committee which will select the Award finalists.  These six finalists will be asked to present their proposals in person to the Committee on Saturday July 22, 2017.  Please save this date as it will be the only presentation opportunity.  From that presentation the Committee will choose the three award recipients for the 2018 exhibitions.  We recommend group exhibitions of three to six artists.  The word “Emerging Curator” is loosely defined and may include curators who are artists, writers or others who conceive of and organize an exhibition.  Artists in the proposed exhibition must be practicing in California, and can be emerging or in their mid-careers.

Armory Center for the Arts Paid Summer Studio Internship

Basic information:
Each summer, the Armory offers more than 250 classes in a variety of media, for all levels of ability, for children ages 3-11, youth ages 12-18 and adults. All classes are taught by the Armory’s faculty of professional artists. Under the guidance of the Manager of Studio Programs, Grace Lacques, the Studio Intern will assist with the daily implementation of this diverse and fast paced summer art program.

The ideal candidate is currently enrolled in an undergraduate college program studying fine art, early childhood education, or a related field. Candidates with experience in customer service, childcare and working in educational settings are encouraged to apply. Ideal skill sets include: well organized, attention to detail, excellent communicator, proficiency in Excel and an affinity for working with children, youth and parents. (more…)

Open Call – 2018 FOCA Curatorial Submission

Fellows of Contemporary Art (FOCA) is a non-profit organization that supports contemporary art in California (Since 1975). FOCA Curators Lab Committee is currently accepting proposals for our 2018 Curators Lab Exhibitions, the deadline is June 16, 2017. Six finalists will be interviewed on July 22, 2017, three of those finalists will receive a $2,000 award and will have the opportunity to organize a group exhibition in our space located in Chinatown, Los Angeles.
