University of Chicago – MFA in Visual Arts Virtual Open House 11/21
Thursday, November 7th, 2024At the University of Chicago, we believe art is a cultural product, and as such, we encourage students to explore the specific artistic concerns pertinent to their work, as well as relevant theoretical, social and historical issues.
Our MFA student body is comprised of artists working in sculpture, photography, painting, installation, performance, video and new media. Students are expected to work with all faculty, whose expertise cross a number of disciplines. We believe that art should not be an isolating activity and that students/artists benefit from the cross-fertilization of daily contact with people working across different media and dealing with similar sets of issues.
The University of Chicago Department of Visual Arts will be hosting a virtual open house for prospective students on Thursday, November 21 at 2:00 PM CST.
During this session we will provide an overview of the MFA in Visual Arts program and answer questions about graduate study and the graduate application process at the University of Chicago.
Individuals interested in learning more about our program can RSVP at apply-humanities.uchicago.edu/register/mfaoh2024

We are Mann Mukti, a dedicated group committed to advocating for our community, shifting the conversation around mental health, and offering valuable resources to the South Asian population. In honor of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are kicking off our advocacy efforts by hosting a wellness fair and candlelight vigil on Monday, October 28th from 4-7 pm in Bruin Plaza. In the final 30 minutes, we will come together in front of the stage for a candlelight vigil led by SAHARA, a non-profit organization serving Survivors of all forms of abuse within the South Asian community and beyond. Upcoming Exhibit – KAOS Theory: The Afrokosmic Media Arts of Ben Caldwell
Thursday, October 10th, 2024(Los Angeles, CA) — The California African American Museum (CAAM) and Art + Practice (A+P) announce the presentation of a retrospective highlighting the work of media arts innovator and community leader Ben Caldwell. The multimedia exhibition KAOS Theory: The Afrokosmic Media Arts of Ben Caldwell will be on view October 12, 2024–March 8, 2025 at A+P in Leimert Park.
Born in 1945 in New Mexico, Ben Caldwell is a dreamer from the desert who spent his youth gazing at the sky and watching his grandfather project films at a local movie theater. After being drafted and serving in the Vietnam War, Caldwell shed his gun for a camera and eventually landed in Los Angeles to pursue an MFA in film at UCLA, coming of age within the groundbreaking LA Rebellion film movement of the 1960s to 1980s.
Working closely with other Black filmmakers and educators, Caldwell envisioned cinema as an instrument that could heal and emancipate. In 1984, he opened KAOS Network, the media arts hub that has helped steward Leimert Park Village’s traditions of Black artistry, fellowship, and love for over four decades.
