Piece by Piece is a  a 501(c)3 registered nonprofit social-enterprise which provides wellness support for residents of South LA & Skidrow through free mosaic-art workshops. The Piece by Piece mission is to empower residents who have experienced homelessness or economic insecurity by providing free mosaic art workshops enabling them to build confidence, earn supplementary income, promote wellness and an improved quality of life.

Volunteers play a crucial role in the success of Piece by Piece, and your involvement will truly impact the artists and community here. There are currently a variety of opportunities available:

  • Organize, clean, and prep mosaic materials

  • Photograph mosaic pieces for our website (photography skills helpful)
  • Classroom assistant (prepare materials and support instructors)
  • Administrative support (packing orders, managing inventory, greeting artists)
  • Supporting the team at events (pop-ups, outreach, etc)

One-time, occasional, and recurring participation is welcome. Groups and individuals alike are welcome. To participate, fill out the interest form on our Get Involved page, or contact amir@piecebypiece.org with any questions.

We hope to hear from you soon, and thank you for supporting Piece by Piece!

KvARTirnik in Westwood

Thursday, November 14th, 2024

Open Call for Kv(art)irnik in Westwood.

Kv(art)irnik is an independent organization that aims to provide an informal space for LA artists to communicate and share their work. We are inspired by the Soviet apartment exhibitions (kvartirniks), where underground artists of the time advocated for free experimental art and turned upside down the very idea of art exhibition. With our apartment exhibits, we strive to revive the traditions of underground art communities – and your artwork/performance can become a part of kv(art)irnik’s next show after completing a short survey that can be found in this link.  https://linktr.ee/kvartla

See you at the opening night!

Publication Opportunity – Matchbox Magazine

Thursday, November 7th, 2024

Matchbox Magazine, an annual UC-wide literary and visual arts publication, is accepting undergraduate submissions for our 19th edition (prose, poetry, visual art, music, and spoken word), until the submission deadline of 1/15/25. If you have not seen our previous editions around your campus before, then you can also check them out at our website.

Matchbox is a wonderful opportunity for students who have not been previously published to receive recognition for their work. Last year, we received approximately 500 total submissions thanks to our contacts at UCLA, ultimately enabling us to represent the collective artistry of UC undergraduates in our 19th edition. We hope to have a large presence of UCLA undergraduates in this year’s issue, and believe we can make that happen with your help!

Students can submit their work to Matchbox Magazine at our matchboxmagazine@gmail.com. Feel free to contact me, Dylan (dcabrero@ucsc.edu), with any questions or concerns. You can also message us on Instagram, or contact us directly at matchboxmagazine@gmail.com.

Submissions at a glance:

  • We will be accepting submissions from now until 1/15/2025 (limited to UC undergraduates)
  • Submissions can be sent directly to matchboxmagazine@gmail.com
  • All schools represented in our magazine will receive copies of our 19th edition to be circulated among their student body

Schoenberg Art Walk Applications – NOW OPEN!

Thursday, February 1st, 2024

On behalf of the Alpert Student Advisory Board, we would like to extend an invitation to apply to present at the second annual Schoenberg Art Walk on Friday, April 5th! The purpose of our event is to connect students across the artistic schools at UCLA with one another and create avenues for future interdepartmental collaboration. While students will be prioritized, we welcome and encourage submissions from faculty and staff as well!

The “Schoenberg Art Walk” is a self-guided art showcase which aims to inform and engage student creative works by exhibition. The well-loved, annual event is a large-scale, student-run showcase that features artists from the Herb Alpert School of Music, School of the Arts and Architecture, as well as the School of Theater, Film and Television. We had an excellent audience turnout last year, and received an abundance of glowing feedback from both featured artists and guests.

This event will take place in the Schoenberg Music Building and will comprise an eclectic collection of musical acts, solo and/or group dance, visual art, film, theater, and much more. Selected “exhibits” will be interspersed throughout the building, while Schoenberg Art Walk attendees will roam the hallways and classrooms to interact with artists and appreciate their works. To apply to be a featured artist, please fill out this Google Form by Friday, February 16th @11:59 PM. Thank you! We look forward to showcasing your art to a wider audience and connecting you with other creative minds at UCLA.

Call for Submissions – Vagabond Multilingual Journal

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024

The spirit of UC Berkeley’s comparative literature department is multidisciplinary, which is exactly the essence of Vagabond Multilingual Magazine.

The Vagabondeditorial board is pleased to announce that our Issue 3 reading period is open for submissions. For the third issue of Vagabond Multilingual Journal, we ask scholars to engage with the idea of translation as an act of transformation. Translation, to us, is not just the act of bringing a text from one language to another. It’s all around us, all the time: encompassing our interactions with others, the act of creating and receiving art itself, and even our own identities. We’d love to see submissions that embrace the ambiguities that lie at the center of living in a multilingual, multicultural world. Submissions do not need to adhere strictly to the theme, but submissions which show focus on multilingualism and/or multiculturalism are preferred.
