Call for artistic works – Herb Alpert School of Music

Call for Artistic Contributions: We invite artists, composers, writers, poets, performers, and other creatives to contribute response works inspired by the themes of resilience, regeneration, and community in the wake of the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. Firebirth: Kindling the Sounds of Resilience in Los Angeles — a project brought together by graduate students in the Department of Musicology — centers around a new musical composition by composer Will Rand, featuring violinist Grace M. Alexander, that reflects on how sound, story, and place shape our understanding of recovery and collective strength.

More information about the project and piece can be found here:

We’re seeking new creative works — visual, sonic, spoken, interactive, and interdisciplinary — that respond to:

  • the lived experience of fire and renewal,
  • ecological and cultural landscapes of Los Angeles,
  • the interplay between sound, memory, and community after the 2025 fires in LA
  • the ways creative expression helps us reflect, heal, and imagine forward after the fires.

Selected pieces will either be featured in our culminating concert or showcased as part of a gallery event alongside “Firebirth,” giving audiences a layered experience that bridges art, environment, and community efforts.

Submission Guidelines

  • Open to all disciplines at all stages of their academic careers
  • Submit a brief artist statement, along with a description of your piece and its medium
  • Deadline: March 1
  • Email submissions to hello@firebirthla.com

Join us in amplifying voices of resilience and in sharing creative interpretations that spark dialogue about the futures of Los Angeles through community and cross-disciplinary dialogue.
