Summer 2023 Internships at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

This summer, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum will be hosting 10 internships for the following fields/areas-of-expertise:

  • Art Education
  • Art and Social Practice
  • Interpretation and Audience Research
  • Library and Archives
  • Digitization

Art and Leadership Program Intern – $14 an hour

This internship aims to provide a variety of experience in art education, classroom management and creative opportunities as part of a well-rounded summer program for middle school students. Interns will be trained to work with children on creativity, self-expression, and the development of their artistic talents in order to enhance their self-confidence and self-respect. While leading day-to-day lessons within the program, interns will also learn how to successfully engage and facilitate a camp-like experience for youth.

In addition, interns will receive mentoring from experienced Museum staff on installation planning for the final art exhibition. They will also receive coaching on putting together an official Art & Leadership Zine for the summer of 2023. This will provide first-hand experience with writing, photography, and graphic design.

Key Learning/Experience for Intern:

  • Lesson planning, lesson facilitation, and engagement in a classroom-like setting
  • Art show curation, organization, and installation
  • Writing, designing, editing, and photography
  • Administrative work such as data entry and collection through the records-keeping work of the Art & Leadership Program
  • Getting to know the ins and outs of how a museum operates as well as meeting with experienced Museum staff weekly to learn about their job and the industry

Background and Qualifications

  • BA studies focused on art, studio art, art history, art education, museum studies, or education preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Interest in art or art education
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve quickly and work well under pressure
  • Experience working with middle school students preferred

Art and Social Practice Intern – $14 an hour

This internship aims to provide a variety of curatorial research opportunities as part of several developing and active community and artist collaborations and exhibition projects:

  • Research on local and regional artists, potential studio visits with Curator of Art & Social Practice
  • Research in the O’Keeffe and other local archives and collections and through community oral histories and crowd-sourced media
  • Supporting Curator of Art & Social Practice with internal collaborative working group
  • Research and application of best practices and different strategies for working with communities through hands-on experiences
  • Learning across the organization

In addition, intern will co-develop a project with supervisor that relates to one of the above projects but allows a deeper dive and a ‘takeaway’ for the intern and the organization.

Key Learning/Experience for Intern:

•     Research skills in archives and through public forums/crowdsourcing

•     Working with practicing artists

•     Presenting ideas and findings to colleagues

Background and Qualifications

•     BA in with experience in Art History and/or Museum Studies preferred

  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Openness to working hands-on with individuals and communities of all ages and backgrounds

Interpretation and Audience Research Intern – $14 an hour

This internship focuses on interpretation and audience research at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum:

  • Work with Deputy Director and curatorial staff to refine interpretive plans for upcoming exhibitions and installations, including collaborating to develop interpretive materials such as labels, audio tour recordings, etc. 30%
  • Survey collection and intercept interviews with visitors on specific research questions, including what expectations visitors had prior to visiting, 20%
  • Gallery observations, including timing and tracking of visitors in the museum, 25%
  • Work with supervisor to analyze data and report on findings, 15%
  • Give a short presentation to staff on the projects completed during the summer internship, 5%
  • Learn about other departments in the organization, 5%

Key Learning/Experience for Intern:

  • Learn about art museum interpretation and its role in developing exhibitions and installations, as well as the intersection between interpretation and curation.
  • Learn about audience research methodologies, including survey creation and survey data collection and timing and tracking. 
  • Learn about developing interview protocols and practices for audience research.
  • Learn about museums, how they are organized, what kinds of work and careers are available within the museum field, and what kinds of skills and knowledge are needed to work in various museum professions.

Background and Qualifications

  • Some college
  • Experience with social science research methodologies not required, but beneficial

Skills and Abilities

· Interested in museums, particularly how exhibitions and installations are developed and implemented

· Outgoing, comfortable speaking with people

· Organized and detail oriented

Library and Archives Internship – $14 an hour

This internship aims to provide a variety of learning experiences in an art library and archive environment:

  • Assist with daily library management and reference activities
  • Collections care, processing, and cataloging, including special collections and archives
  • Creation/revision of discovery and research tools
  • Transcribe archival materials such as correspondence, writings, and oral histories
  • Give a short presentation to staff on the projects completed during the internship
  • Learn about other departments in the organization

Key Learning/Experience for Intern:

  • Familiarity with art library and archive professional standards and practices
  • Familiarity with information management systems
  • Work effectively both independently and collaboratively with archive and library professionals

Wikipedian-in-Residence Internship – $14 an hour

This internship aims to provide a variety of opportunities to explore cultural heritage data and how museums can interface with external platforms such as Wikipedia/Wikidata, as well as data authorities from the Getty and Library of Congress:

  • Work with the Museum team using Wikipedia to connect and enhance Museum data particularly surrounding people in Georgia O’Keeffe’s circle to strengthen, broaden, and make a more inclusive knowledge network
  • Defining priorities around areas of need for Wikipedia entries with focus on various vectors such as ‘significant contributor’ (as defined by Wikipedia standards), under-represented groups, and connections to the Georgia O’Keeffe context
  • Writing and improving articles and convening an edit-a-thon to build community according to Wikipedia standards
  • Researching and establishing connections with O’Keeffe collections using standard vocabularies such as the Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) and the Library of Congress Names Authority File (LCNAF)
  • Learning across the organization

Key Learning/Experience for Intern:

•    Knowledge of cultural heritage data standards and how these interfaces with Wikipedia/Wikidata

•    Familiarity with collections and archive information management systems

•    Experience organizing an event and sharing the community guidelines and ideas behind Wikipedia

•    Working collaboratively with and learning from Museum teams

•    Presenting ideas and findings to colleagues

Background and Qualifications

    BA with experience in Art History and/or Museum Studies preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Interest in Georgia O’Keeffe and networks of artistic communities
  • Experience with Wikipedia and familiarity with the concept of a Wikipedian-in-Residence
  • Love of writing, research, and metadata
  • Word processing and presentation-writing computer skills
