American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative

We are the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALCSI), and we are working alongside California State Senator Bob Archuleta to pass Senate Bill 1124, legislation we helped develop to reduce lung cancer deaths by increasing awareness of screening.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S., yet awareness of screening remains extremely low. Only about 24% of eligible individuals get screened, and the majority of at-risk individuals have never heard of lung cancer screening.

SB 1124 would require signage at the point of tobacco sale and provide screening eligibility information to high-risk users. This approach helps reach people where they are, particularly those at highest risk, and promotes early detection, which can significantly improve health outcomes.

We’re currently building student support across UCLA to demonstrate that the youth care about public health, prevention, and equitable access to life-saving information. If you’re interested in supporting this effort, please take a moment to fill out this short form:

By signing up, you will be included on a student support list, and we will send you more information about the bill and how to get involved. This is a great opportunity to support a public health effort and see real-world change in California, as well as gain experience in advocacy and legislation!

Thank you all for your time and consideration.
