This course surveys the history of Asian American art from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Organized chronologically and thematically, it examines artistic production in relation to key historical developments, including Chinese Exclusion, Japanese Internment, and the Asian American Movement. Students will explore diverse forms of art and visual culture shaped by migration, cultural negotiation, and questions of race and identity, and examine their interpretation, display, and preservation.
