Call for Artists: Plaza del Sol, Phase II, Project

Call for Artists, Plaza Del Sol, Phase II: The City of Sunnyvale Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist, or artistic team, to design and execute an original, artist designed lighting feature for Plaza del Sol in downtown Sunnyvale.

  • Artist Eligibility: This Request for Qualifications is open to practicing professional and emerging artists, who reside in the Western United States (AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA and WY). Artists residing in Sunnyvale and who meet all the criteria outlined in this RFQ are especially urged to apply. Applicants must be 18 and over.
  • Artwork Budget: $90,000 (all-inclusive)
  • Site and Project Description: This project is to renovate an urban park on top of an underground parking structure located in downtown Sunnyvale at the corner of West Evelyn Avenue and South Frances Street (200 W. Evelyn Avenue). The park is surrounded by a mix of retail, residential, commercial and historical buildings. The upcoming construction was designed to enhance the existing park, completed in 2004, through upgrades and added amenities designed to improve the user experience.
  • Public Art Location: This commission will concentrate on an artist designed lighting element among an established seating area adjacent to retail establishments. Artists will be asked to design an artistic lighting feature that can enhance and further illuminate the seating area, while providing an original work of art for the park. Electricity will be provided to the site, but artists will need to include lighting fixtures, additional wiring, panels and junction boxes in their proposal if selected for the project. Selected artist will need to work with project architects and engineers to integrate the artwork with all amenities on the site.
  • Deadline for Applications: Monday, February 16, 2026, 11:59p.m.
