Jumpstart UCLA is Hiring

Hi Bruins!

Jumpstart UCLA is currently hiring for our 2022-2023 program year, and we’d like to invite you to apply! Jumpstart is a national early literacy program that partners teams of caring college students with local preschool classrooms located in underserved communities to promote language, literacy, and social-emotional skills.

Did you know that children from low-income neighborhoods often start kindergarten 60% (roughly 18 months) behind their more affluent peers? This is what we refer to as the “kindergarten achievement gap” and it only grows wider with each grade level. Jumpstart members play a vital role in our movement to close this gap and better prepare our next generation to succeed both academically and socially in school.

If you are excited to work with your fellow Bruins in creating innovative and fun ways to inspire learning in the classroom, Jumpstart is the place for you! But don’t just take our word for it—you can learn a little more about the program from our alumni here.

Jumpstart is largely funded through AmeriCorps which provides all AmeriCorps members with the Segal Education Award -currently $1,374- upon successful completion of a full term of service (300 hours). Jumpstart is also afederal work-study (FWS) program on campus, allowing eligible students to be paid bi-weekly for their Jumpstart service. FWS eligibility is not a requirement to join the program.

Applications are now open and can be found at www.jstart.org/apply

Please submit applications by September 30th

Below is a tentative breakdown of the required minimum 8-12 hours/week. All hours, except session times, can be flexible according to your class schedule.

  • 4hrs: Session – Implement Jumpstart curriculum as a team twice per week during a 2-hour time block. This time stays fixed throughout the year
    • Sessions are currently scheduled for Tuesday/Thursday OR Wednesday/Friday from 9-11am
  • 2-4hrs: Team Planning Meetings – Meet with your team twice per week for 1-2 hours each to debrief and prepare for session implementation
  • 2-6hrs: Individual Planning – This time can be used for individual work such as book prep and preparing materials for session
  • Varies: Training – Participate in intensive pre-service and ongoing trainings throughout the year

Things to note:

  • FWS compensation starts at:
    • $16.50 for Corps Members

  • We are planning for a year of fully in-person service. If any of our program partners are impacted by Covid or another health concern and need to change their visitor policy, we are prepared to pivot to a hybrid or virtual year.
