Over the last several years, driven in part by reports released by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Americans for the Arts, a growing awareness has emerged among museums and arts organizations that the cultural sector remains less diverse than the whole of American society. The focus on being more diverse and equitable is not a public relations issue, but an essential part of making museums welcoming cultural and social spaces.
In an event moderated by Deborah Cullen-Morales of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, we invite you to hear from the next generation of art museum leaders as they offer a series of provocations to ASU leadership and respected museum directors at the forefront of leading efforts to change the sector.
Distinguished panelists include:
- Michael Govan, CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director, Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
- Franklin Sirmans, director, Perez Art Museum, Miami.
- Dhyandra Lawson, recent graduate and assistant curator, Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
- Matthew Villar Miranda, recent graduate and visual arts fellow, Walker Art Center.
- Celia Yang, head of director’s strategic initiatives, Asia, Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
- Miki Garcia, director, ASU Art Museum.
Designed for arts-interested audiences and museumgoers, the event is organized by the ASU-LACMA Master’s Fellowship Program in art history, a partnership launched in 2018 by ASU and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with the goal to culturally diversify the leadership of museums. The event marks the fourth anniversary of the program and the addition of the Perez Art Museum to a growing national consortium of museum partners.
