Hood Design Studio looking for Full-Time Designer

Hood Design Studio is looking for a Full-Time Designer to assist with the Art + Fabrication work within our practice, with projects within the San Francisco Bay Area, nationally and internationally. Hood Design Studio is currently a 15-person design office based in Oakland, CA. We are currently remote and there is potential for hybrid work based on the candidate.

This position will interact most frequently with our Art Practice Manager and our Founder.
Our ideal candidate is passionate about materials, fabrication, small-scale details and enjoys a highly
collaborative and iterative creative process.


The main responsibilities will include:

Art Projects Conceptualization and Development
o Assist in research of design idea(s)
o Assist with the development of project design narratives
o Assist to identify and coordinate work as applicable with potential fabricator partner(s) and suppliers
o Lead the preparation of prototypes, scale models, and/or samples for testing ideas to finalize the proposal

Art Projects Implementation
o Assist in the preparation of necessary documentation for the permitting and execution of art
o Assist in technical design & planning work to finalize details of the piece
o Lead the preparation of additional prototypes, scale models, and/or samples for confirming
constructability, durability of art components and for client presentation.
o Lead the preparation of materials for the fabrication of mockups, as applicable
o Support with communication from Hood Design with client, contractor, and fabricators, to deliver the art installation per contract schedule and within budget


DESIRED EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILL SETS:
o Experience with 3D printer and laser engraver
o Analog model-building
o Detail-oriented
o Collaborative
o General knowledge of various construction materials
o General knowledge of various fabrication processes i.e. metal, wood, glass
o General knowledge of standard connection and attachment methods


Encouraged, but not required (training provided):
o Experience with software: Photoshop, Lumion, Autocad, Rhino 3D
o Prior workshop experience
o Prior experience with fabrication
