Announcing the Rose Bowl Curriculum Development Internship – Applications for Fall 2017 Now Being Accepted!

- Do you have experience mentoring or tutoring in LA with a UCLA student group, and do you like working on a team?
- Does the idea of building a new educational tour curriculum for one of the region’s most celebrated historic landmarks excite you?
If your answer to the above questions is YES, please consider applying for the 2017-18 Rose Bowl Curriculum Development Internship! This project-based internship invites Bruins to guide the evolution of the Rose Bowl’s popular educational tour program. Hundreds of elementary and middle-school students from greater LA participate in this growing program each year. Your work as an intern will make their visits both educational and memorable.
Internship Description
- This unique assignment invites interns to rely on the historic Rose Bowl itself as a core teaching tool
- This is a project-based internship which will invite a team of Bruins to develop updated educational tour scripts, curricula, and learning activities for the Rose Bowl school program.
- Your curriculum will reinforce Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) lessons and California State learning standards for K-8 students.
- Internship will require working with professional staff at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena at least two hours each week; however, some meetings with your supervisor and internship assignments can be completed from the UCLA Campus.
- Interns are also welcome to work all their hours at the Rose Bowl offices.
- Credit-based internship which requires interns to arrange a ‘195’ internship course, a ‘199’ research project, or a comparable experiential learning course
- Your curriculum and lessons will feature hands-on activities that reinforce topics that students are learning about during their Rose Bowl tour.
- Activities will be based on your best ideas and may include:
- Building models of stadium architectural features to teach students basic engineering and math concepts;
- Math, physics and geometry lessons based on football or soccer plays;
- Science experiments based on the maintenance and operation of a major historical landmark built in 1922
- Technology and physics lessons based on Rose Bowl broadcast operations
Qualifications
- Open to UCLA undergraduates, graduate students, and teaching credential candidates from all majors!
- History majors with an interest in teaching and STEM curriculum development are especially encouraged to apply
- STEM majors with an interest in tutoring or future teaching careers are also encouraged to apply
- Interest in building a curriculum that blends local Rose Bowl History with California State STEM learning standards
- Ability to work at the Rose Bowl facility at least two hours each week (more hours on-site are welcome and encouraged)
- Clear and consistent communication with supervisors when a portion of work is completed from the UCLA campus
- Comfort with basic STEM concepts (Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, etc.) at high school level (you do not have to be a UCLA STEM major to be qualified)
- Previous experience in tutoring, mentoring, teaching, and lesson plan development a plus

A National Historic Landmark built in 1922 and known for the New Year’s Tournament of Roses Football Game, the Rose Bowl Stadium has also earned its World-Class Reputation by hosting five NFL Super Bowl Games, the 1984 Olympic Soccer Matches, the 1994 Men’s World Cup, the 1999 Women’s World Cup, the 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 BCS National College Football Championship Games and was home to the inaugural 2015 College Football Playoff Semi-final game and numerous other memorable events over the past eighty plus years. The Rose Bowl tour program gives students from Los Angeles and Pasadena schools the opportunity get a behind-the-scenes look at the stadium’s historic features and current evolution. Students visit the renovated 1922 Locker Room, Press Box, Court of Champions, Playing Field, Broadcast Center and so much more.
