- Frances Stark (born 1967) is an interdisciplinary artist and writer, whose work centers on the use and meaning of language, and the translation of this process into the creative act. She often works with carbon paper to hand-trace letters, words, and sentences from classic works by Emily Dickinson, Goethe, Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, and others to explore the voices and interior states of writers. She uses these hand-traced words, often in repetition, as visual motifs in drawings and mixed media works that reference a subject, mood, or another discipline such as music, architecture, or philosophy.
Stark was born in 1967 in Southern California and lives and works in Los Angeles. She received an MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, in 1993, and a BA from San Francisco State University in 1991. Stark has shown extensively both nationally and internationally at institutions including Tate Modern, London; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Kunsthalle Zurich; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge; Moscow Museum of Modern Art; and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has participated in many important biennial exhibitions, such as the 2008 and 2017 Whitney Biennials; 54th and 57th International Venice Biennales, 2011 and 2017; 2013 Carnegie International, Pittsburgh; and “Le Grand Balcon,” La Biennale de Montreal, 2016.

Selcouth Dance Theater Company is looking to incorporate local artists’ designs in our upcoming performance: ‘MARK’.
‘MARK’ is a dance theater performance inspired by individual and collective power and the possibilities that arise from each action small or large. Our choices leave marks, setting a whole series of actions into motion. How do we uplift or oppress each other through our actions? What kind of Mark do we want to leave behind?
