The Museum Assistant/Arts Education Coordinator supports all operations at the Weisman Museum of Art, and develops and implements the ARTSReach program for K-12 schoolchildren. This position helps to enhance the educational experience at the University for all students, fosters artistic excellence and creativity, and connects Pepperdine University with the richly varied communities of Los Angeles and surrounding communities.

Duties

  • Supervise museum operations, such as scheduling, facilitating, and leading tours, assisting with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, managing and supervising events, record keeping, and submitting facilities and maintenance requests. Provide curatorial assistance for exhibitions and programs.
  • Coordinate and implement the ARTSReach program, including scheduling schools, allocating bus grants to schools, supervising mailings, coordinating volunteers and staff, and managing financials and deposits.
  • Hire, supervise, manage, mentor, and train Pepperdine students to serve as gallery attendants, security personnel, customer service representatives, and ambassadors for the Weisman Museum of Art. Approve timecards. Assign tasks.
  • Provide office management and financial assistance for the Weisman Museum, including processing deposits for sales and submitting requisitions and purchase orders.
  • Serve as point of contact for museum events including requesting and overseeing warehouse, Presentation Services, catering, and Integrated Marketing Communications.
  • Work with Museum Director and Publicity Manager to create and execute social media calendar. Work with Museum Director and Publicity Manager to brainstorm and implement strategies for increasing museum attendance among Pepperdine students and the general public.
  • Design and implement Family Art Day community events. Create Teacher Education packets for each exhibition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Uphold University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: College degree in visual art, theatre, art history, education, or equivalent experience. Undergraduate-level understanding of modern and contemporary art. Exhibition installation and/or art handling knowledge and experience. Well organized, attentive to detail, and able to multitask. Professional communication skills. Microsoft Office applications. Google Drive Applications.

Preferred: B.A. or B.F.A. in visual arts, art history, education, or the equivalent. Familiarity with Elements, Principles, and Standards in K-12 Arts Education programs. Retail and cash handling skills. Managing and record keeping skills. Public speaking skills. Familiarity with PeopleSoft. Familiarity with social media platforms. InDesign or other graphics software.

This is a Regular, Nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.

Expected Pay Range: $20.70 – $23.00 per hour 

The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level.
