Become an Intern at 18th Street Arts Center during the school year! We have openings for interns in the events, programs, communications, and development fields.

18th Street Arts Center’s internships are designed to give students real world professional experience. We offer self-directed creative projects which in the past have included opportunities to curate shows, program events, and publish their own writing in arts publications and in our annual catalogue, and documentary initiatives. Each project depends on the interests of the individual and on the framework of the internship. As such, our interns are given the opportunity to develop their resumes with real accomplishments that have genuine professional impact. These are unpaid internship (college credit eligible) opportunities.

18th Street Arts Center Communications & Events Intern

REPORTS TO: Director of Communications & Outreach

TIME COMMITMENT: Minimum 3-month commitment of 12 hours per week. Schedule is flexible.

LOCATION: Santa Monica, CA. Partial telecommuting.

COMPENSATION: Volunteer. College credit possible; check with your academic advisor to make arrangements

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Communications Department shapes the branding, marketing, and communications strategy of the Center. We are looking for a motivated, creative, and enthusiastic intern with strong writing, visual, and organizational abilities to help us spread the word! The intern will gain valuable experience working at an art non-profit, acquiring skills related to creating and sustaining an online audience. This position provides a creative opportunity to understand the relationship between social media, advertising, design, and contemporary art. The candidate will also support the planning and execution of free public events, learn how to design and produce small and large public events, including the development and dissemination of all the marketing materials for print, web, and social media channels, including post-event follow-up and evaluation.

    • Learn how to design and produce events

    • Design capabilities a plus (Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, etc)
    • Build and maintain the Social Media Posting Schedule, which includes performing artist research
    • Gathering information for upcoming events and artists: artist bios, images of artists’ work, crafting posts across social media platforms
  • Track communications coverage and metrics, creating weekly and monthly reports.

QUALIFICATIONS: Familiar with current social media sites including but not limited to: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Current in social media platforms, tools, and trends. Knowledge and interest of social media practices in the arts and events production in a mid-size arts organization. Excellent writing and visual communications skills. Strong attention to detail. Passion for provoking public engagement.

* Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator a plus

JOB OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of the Director of Communications and Outreach the selected candidate will expand their portfolio and gain valuable professional creative experience working with an arts organization on print and digital design. Work on catalogues, artists books, showcards, ads, logos and branding with lots of creative freedom in a collaborative environment. Must be proficient with a widely used design software – Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Sketch, or Invision.

18th Street Arts Center Development Intern

18th Street Arts Center is the largest artist residency program in Southern California. We host 30+ international artists a year, and have 20 local artists and organizations on our campus. We are a small staff, and consistently need enthusiastic arts-lovers to help us support artists and provoke public dialogue!

REPORTS TO: Executive Director and Development Associate

TIME COMMITMENT: Minimum 3-month commitment of 8 hours per week. Schedule is flexible.

LOCATION: Santa Monica, CA. Partial telecommuting.

COMPENSATION: Volunteer. College credit possible; check with your academic advisor to make arrangements.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of the Executive Director and Development Associate, the Development Intern will assist with special events, communications, and support our team in all areas of fundraising. The internship provides a detailed understanding of donor relations, event planning, prospect research and outreach, and fundraising strategy. Intern will gain valuable training and real world experience on NationBuilder and MobileCause platforms.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be highly detailed and organized with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to learn the details of fundraising, event planning, and creative thinking. Experience with annual fund, alumni, or donor programs a plus, but not required.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the supervision of the Director of Communications and Outreach and the Events Specialist, the Events & Outreach Intern will support the planning and execution of public events. Learning how to design and produce small and large experiences, the intern will assist with the development of event schedules, gathering materials, and other event logistics. In addition to event facilitation duties the Events & Outreach Intern will also maintain and grow relationships with local vendors and donors. We are looking for a motivated, creative, and enthusiastic intern with strong writing, visual, and organizational abilities to help us spread the word!
