As the only public facilities in the area, these restrooms serve residents, visitors, hikers, surfers, and beachgoers year\u2011round\u2014making this a highly visible and meaningful public art opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Residency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selected artist will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explore the natural and cultural stories of the King Range NCA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design and paint murals that celebrate place, foster stewardship, and reflect community identity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lead a collaborative, community\u2011driven process involving local residents and youth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create durable, welcoming murals appropriate for a public setting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This residency invites bold, imaginative approaches to interpreting public lands. Artists may explore ecological stories, human histories, and the deep connections between people and the landscapes of the Lost Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Location<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The King Range NCA encompasses 68,000 acres along 35 miles of California\u2019s rugged \u201cLost Coast.\u201d Shelter Cove &#8211; remote, scenic, and rich in community pride &#8211; will serve as the artist\u2019s home base. Applicants should be comfortable working in a rural, isolated environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Residency Support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Local housing for one artist for the full 4\u2011week residency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$50\/day reimbursement upon completion; mileage reimbursed at $0.14\/mile, beginning after arrival<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognition through BLM and partner websites, press, and social media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optional gallery showing at the SCARF Gallery (Inn of the Lost Coast)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All mural paint and materials provided<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Artist Expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dedicate at least 75% of residency time to mural design and completion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reside in Shelter Cove for the duration of the residency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lead at least two community workshops or workdays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate respectfully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide personal transportation and personal\/art supplies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open to U.S.\u2011based artists age 18+ with experience or interest in murals, public art, environmental education, public lands, or community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Application Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Application\/Cover Page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Six artwork samples (JPEG, 300 dpi, \u22642 MB each)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Image list with titles, media, dates, and details<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professional resume<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One\u2011page residency proposal addressing:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mural concepts for Mal Coombs Park<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interest in the residency and the King Range NCA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plans for community involvement (including youth)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideas for interpreting the Lost Coast through art<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Timeline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Application Deadline:<\/strong>\u00a0Friday, March 13, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interviews:<\/strong>\u00a0March 16\u201319, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Notification:<\/strong>\u00a0March 23, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Residency Dates:<\/strong>\u00a0April 20 \u2013 May 18, 2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For questions or to request application materials, please contact: <strong>Sandy Miles<\/strong>&nbsp; Outdoor Recreation Planner, King Range NCA, BLM (707) 986\u20115415 | <a href=\"mailto:smiles@blm.gov\">smiles@blm.gov<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheltercoveartsrecreation.com\">www.sheltercoveartsrecreation.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope you\u2019ll consider applying or share this opportunity with artists in your network.
