\n| Mission or Goal of Unit<\/th>\n | The VCUarts Department of Sculpture and Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia is seeking a dynamic chairperson to join and lead the department. The Sculpture and Extended Media program is a recognized leader in visual arts education and ranked #1 in the country, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report\u2019s graduate ranking. Curators, arts administrators, artist\/teachers and others working in arts nonprofits, academia, or related critical\/theoretical disciplines are encouraged to apply. The Chair will work toward broadening participation among members of underrepresented groups, leading the integration of inclusive perspectives into the culture and curriculum of the department.<\/p>\n The Department of Sculpture and Extended Media is led by a diverse and accomplished group of working artists. The program promotes a fluid exploration of the transformative possibilities of art within the context of the critical, socio-political, philosophical and technological conditions shaping the world today. The program offers MFA<\/span> and BFA<\/span> degrees with 12 graduate students and over 100 undergraduate majors in the department. The department is currently staffed with seven full-time faculty, an assistant chair, a fiscal administrator, and two full-time technical faculty. The Department occupies over 50,000 square feet of studio and shop space, and offers students an immersive learning experience, drawing from legacy techniques to the most progressive approaches to contemporary art making.<\/p>\nThe Department is located in the Fine Arts Building housing the departments of Painting & Printmaking, Craft\/Material Studies and Kinetic Imaging\u2019s graduate studios, giving students constant opportunities for conversation and collaboration. VCUarts and the Department of Sculpture and Extended Media are also building vital and exciting interdisciplinary connections across VCU\u2019s campus including the School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, the College of Humanities and Sciences, the School of Business and more. These relationships offer our students opportunities to explore interdisciplinary, inter-media, anti-disciplinary approaches to their artistic studies.<\/p>\n The department is located near downtown Richmond and two blocks from the new Institute for Contemporary Art designed by Steven Holl that opened in 2018. \n\u25cf Maintain an active, independent creative practice;
\n\u25cf Build collaborative relationships within the School, the Dean\u2019s Office, other Chairs and Directors, HR and across all university departments, while being flexible and able to work in a team environment with the potential to develop new strategies for programming;
\n\u25cf Articulate a vision for the department in concert with the Dean and faculty;
\n\u25cf Serve as an advocate for VCU<\/span>, the School, its faculty, students, and the Sculpture and Extended Media department;
\n\u25cf Promote excellence in teaching, creativity, research, and service through community engagement;
\n\u25cf Foster collaborative curriculum across the arts and broader campus;
\n\u25cf Ensure the effective annual assessment of faculty performance. Thoughtfully inspire and evaluate faculty in the areas of teaching, research and service, including mentoring new and current faculty and guiding faculty through the promotion and tenure process;
\n\u25cf Oversight for all areas of department administration, to include finance, recruitment and admissions, course scheduling, personnel, facilities and equipment, travel, procurement, and other duties as assigned;
\n\u25cf Engage nationally and internationally with alumni;
\n\u25cf Partner with the Dean and the School\u2019s development officers in department outreach, alumni relations, and fundraising efforts;
\n\u25cf Collaboration with the School\u2019s admissions team to advocate and participate in events, both undergraduate and graduate, including the execution of a national recruitment plan;
\n\u25cf Represent the interests of the School on designated University committees.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n\n| Required Qualifications<\/th>\n | \u25cf A significant national or international resume to lead a nationally highly ranked program;
\n\u25cf Master\u2019s degree or equivalent academic or arts administrative experience is required;
\n\u25cf Demonstrated competence in creating a trusting and inclusive culture; experience recruiting, hiring, and retaining under-represented faculty and staff, and leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion among all students, faculty and staff;
\n\u25cf Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU<\/span>;
\n\u25cf Proven administrative skills;
