{"id":6089,"date":"2018-12-05T10:55:07","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T18:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.art.ucla.edu\/jobs\/?p=6089"},"modified":"2018-12-05T10:55:07","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T18:55:07","slug":"italy-conservation-summer-field-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jobs.art.ucla.edu\/?p=6089","title":{"rendered":"Italy Conservation Summer Field School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/sgrestore.org\/\"> San Gemini Preservation Studies Program<\/a> is now accepting applications to its summer 2019 field school.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 21st year, with alumni from over 170 colleges and universities worldwide, SGPS is dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage. SGPS offers students the opportunity to study and travel in Italy where they acquire hands-on experience in restoration and conservation.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In 2018 there have been major new developments for our SGPS program. An academic relationship has been established with West Virginia University that offers our students the opportunity to apply for and receive credits through the WVU Art History Department. Also, in 2018, a significant 3-year cooperation agreement has been signed with the Office of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage for the Abruzzo Region to study and conserve archaeological objects held in their museums, as well as a collaboration with the Historic Archives of the Dioceses of Terni for SGPS participants to study and conserve archival documents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Session One (May 27 \u2013 June 21)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Building Restoration \u2013 Touching the Stones<\/strong><br \/>\nRestoration of Traditional Masonry Buildings and Sketching and Analyzing Historic Buildings<br \/>\n(Program includes lectures and restoration field projects*)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Archaeological Ceramics Restoration<\/strong><br \/>\nAnalysis and Restoration of Archaeological Ceramics in Italy<br \/>\n(Program includes lectures and restoration workshop*)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Book Bindings Restoration<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Craft of Making and Restoring Book Bindings<br \/>\nIntroduction to the Conservation of Books and Bindings<br \/>\n(Program includes lectures and practical workshop*)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Session Two (July 8 &#8211; August 2)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Paper Restoration<\/strong><br \/>\nRestoration and Conservation of Paper in Books and Archival Documents<br \/>\n(Program includes lectures and restoration workshop*)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Traditional Painting Techniques<\/strong><br \/>\nTraditional Materials, Methods of Painting and Art Restoration Issues<br \/>\n(Program includes lectures and painting workshop)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preservation Theory and Practice in Italy<\/strong><br \/>\nRestoration Theory, Ethics and Issues<br \/>\n(Program includes lectures and discussion)<\/li>\n<li><strong>RESEARCH PROJECT: Carsulae Roman Baths Excavation Project<\/strong><br \/>\nArchitectural &amp; Structural Survey of the Site<br \/>\n(Program includes research and surveying field work*)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Field Projects:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Restoration of the fa\u00e7ade of the Church of San Carlo (13th century)<\/li>\n<li>Analysis of medieval buildings in San Gemini as part of an urban study of the city<\/li>\n<li>Restoration and conservation of artifacts from the Office of the Ministry of Cultural<\/li>\n<li>Heritage for the Abruzzo Region<\/li>\n<li>Restoration of the Historic Archives of the Dioceses of Terni<\/li>\n<li>Archaeological Survey of the Roman Baths in the Ancient City of Carsulae<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Short Inter-Session Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Preservation Field Trip \u2013 Italy (June 23 \u2013 July 2)<\/strong><br \/>\nA ten-day trip visiting Siena, Florence and Rome: places of cultural interest, with emphasis on the urban and historical development of each town, including specialized visits to places of interest to restorers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To find out more about our program and review the syllabi, please <a href=\"http:\/\/sgrestore.org\/\">click here<\/a> to visit our website.<\/p>\n<p>Our courses are open to students from various disciplines, both undergraduate and graduate.
