{"id":6000,"date":"2018-10-31T10:33:13","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T17:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.art.ucla.edu\/jobs\/?p=6000"},"modified":"2018-10-31T10:33:13","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T17:33:13","slug":"assistant-professor-in-photography-virginia-commonwealth-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jobs.art.ucla.edu\/?p=6000","title":{"rendered":"Assistant Professor in Photography &#8211; Virginia Commonwealth University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a nationally recognized Visiting Artist Program, prominent Department and Affiliated Faculty, comparatively low\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/arts.vcu.edu\/admissions\/financial-info\/\">annual tuition<\/a><\/u>, and a wealth of graduate grant, travel, and teaching opportunities, we are one of the most dynamic, unique graduate\u00a0MFA\u00a0programs in the country.\u00a0 And we are GROWING!\u00a0 The Department is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcujobs.com\/postings\/84003\">searching for a new Assistant Professor<\/a> in Photography to start in fall 2018.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Recent faculty and affiliated faculty accomplishments include:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.markboulos.com\/\">Mark Boulos<\/a>\u2019<\/strong> mixed-reality interactive documentary\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/s2018.siggraph.org\/presentation\/?id=var_174&amp;sess=sess187\">Elastic Time<\/a><\/em>premiered at the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imverse.ch\/project\/elastictime\/\">Sundance<\/a> Film Festival and was featured in the Beyond Cinema showcase <a href=\"https:\/\/2018.giff.ch\/cannes2018\/\">Cannes<\/a>.\u00a0 Mark was the recipient of the American Academy in Rome\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarome.org\/apply\"><strong>Rome Prize in Visual Art<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a> in 2015-16.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduate Director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulthulin.com\/about\"><strong>Paul Thulin<\/strong><\/a>will release his first monograph\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulthulin.com\/\">Pine Tree Ballads<\/a><\/em><\/strong>accompanied\u00a0by a solo exhibition at publisher\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyecaramba.com\/\">Gordon Stettinius<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/candelabooks.com\/\"><strong>Candela Books\u00a0and Gallery<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in early 2019. In addition, his artwork will be highlighted by the gallery at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aipadshow.com\/\">The Photography Show AIPAD<\/a>\u00a0in NYC\u00a0April 4 &#8211; 7, 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonalifilm.com\/\"><strong>Sonali Gulati<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s wonderful personal documentary,\u00a0<em>I Am<\/em> continues to wow on national PBS and screened for a month at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.schwulesmuseum.de\/en\/\">Schwules Museum<\/a>, in Berlin, Germany earlier this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multimedia and social practice artist\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/vcu.edu\/johndfreyer\/\">John Freyer<\/a><\/strong>spent nearly three weeks at the Tate Modern in\u00a0London as the first Tate Exchange Associate Artist from the U.S<em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Photographer\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/justinjamesreed.com\/\">Justin James Reed<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s current publishing project,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ultraterrestrial.xyz\/\">ultraterrestrial.xyz<\/a>, focuses on small edition handmade photography books by feminist voices whose work explores ecological and spiritual landscape energies. Two new titles were debuted at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nyartbookfair.com\/\">Printed Matter&#8217;s NY Art Book Fair<\/a>in September at MoMA PS1.<\/li>\n<li>\nChair <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pieshake.com\/\">Sasha Waters Freyer<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s feature documentary on photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winograndthefilm.com\/\">Garry Winogrand<\/a> won a Special Jury Prize at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival and was released in theaters in September 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonphillipsheridan.com\/\"><strong>Jon-Phillip Sheridan<\/strong><\/a>solar-powered media installation\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonphillipsheridan.com\/Fixed-Air\">Fixed Air<\/a> bowed at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icavcu.org\/exhibitions\/declaration\/\"><em>Declaration<\/em><\/a>, the inaugural show at VCU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/icavcu.org\/\">Institute for Contemporary Art<\/a> in spring 2018.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shanerocheleau.com\/\">Shane Rocheleau<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s beautiful first book of photographs,\u00a0YOU ARE MASTERS OF THE FISH AND BIRDS AND ALL THE ANIMALS aka (<a href=\"https:\/\/gnomicbook.com\/YAMOTFABAATA\">YAMOTFABAATA<\/a>) was recently released by Gnomic Books<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Margot Norton<\/strong>, curator at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/\">New Museum<\/a> who joins us each spring for MFA Candidacy exhibitions and reviews, co-curated the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/view\/sarah-lucas\">Sarah Lucas<\/a> survey that opened to great acclaim<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our\u00a0MFA\u00a0students very often receive VCUarts travel and research awards, averaging $500 for Graduate Travel Grants and $3000 per student in research support for\u00a0MFA\u00a0Thesis Exhibition.<\/strong>\u00a0 Current MFA <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/davidriley\">David Riley<\/a> holds the Graduate Curatorial Assistantship at VCU\u2019s <u>Institute for Contemporary Art<\/u>, which covers full tuition (plus stipend) for the thesis year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The depth and breadth of our program are most clearly visible in the work of our incredible alumni!\u00a0 Recent successes include SUNY Purchase faculty <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lightwork.org\/archive\/stanley-wolukau-wanambwa-one-wall-a-web\/\">Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s first book, <em>One Wall a Web, <\/em>recently published by <a href=\"http:\/\/romapublications.org\/\">Roma Publications<\/a> and shortlisted for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/contests.picter.com\/aperture\/photobook-awards-2018\/\">Aperture Foundation&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/contests.picter.com\/aperture\/photobook-awards-2018\/\">First<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/contests.picter.com\/aperture\/photobook-awards-2018\/\">\u00a0PhotoBook Prize<\/a>. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stephaniedemer.com\/\">Stephanie DeMer<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0recently accepted a position as a Faculty Associate in Photography at Arizona State University and had a two-person show at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grizzlygrizzly.com\/\">Grizzly Grizzly<\/a>\u00a0in Philadelphia.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johannesbarfield.com\/\"><strong>Johannes\u00a0Barfield<\/strong><\/a> used his summer residency at MASS MoCA to explore how race and identity interact with the local environment, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickharkin.com\/\"><strong>Patrick Harkin<\/strong><\/a> entered his second year of his \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamiltonianartists.org\/artists\/2016\/2017\/20\/7\/patrickharkin\">Hamiltonian Artist Fellowship<\/a> in support of the creation of new work.\u00a0 D.C.-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wowsugi.com\/note\/\"><strong>Naoko Wowsugi<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s multidisciplinary work including performance and activism has been exhibited in 2018 at the Ackland Art Museum, the Queens Museum and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art among other venues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our robust Visiting Artist program complements the studio-practice focus of our MFA, with artist talks, individual studio visits, shared meals and small parties to celebrate our visitors!
