see/saw is a print journal by and for undergraduates devoted to publishing original research in art history and art criticism. Founded in 2023 at the University of California, Berkeley, our publication shares innovative critical work to promote intellectual and creative connectivity among an international network of undergraduate students. As emergent art historians, we are committed to diversifying the field and developing intersectional critical analyses of the artistic canon. see/saw is partial to considerations of art and artists that have been historically erased and underemphasized. To view our inaugural issue and get a sense of the work which we have previously published, visit our website at hartberkeley.com/seesaw.
see/saw welcomes submissions pertaining to all art historical genres, regions and time periods from undergraduate students studying at any institution. To submit, please email your previously unpublished work as a .pdf to seesaw.ucb@gmail.com. Essays should be 1000-10000 words in length and formatted using the Chicago Manual of Style. In your email, please include high quality .jpegs of any artworks referenced along with the work’s title, artist, medium, and date (if possible). Once a work is accepted, our staff editors will provide feedback and closely collaborate with the authors prior to publication.
Additionally, see/saw is accepting submissions of student artwork for inclusion alongside textual work. Please email us a high quality image of your previously unpublished artwork along with a brief artist statement (250-500 words).
Our submission window is September 18 to December 24 at 11:59PM. Acceptances will be announced on a rolling basis for publication in the spring 2025 semester.
