The Hammer Museum offers year-long internships to UCLA undergraduate students that develop students’ capacity for professional-level museum service. In the 2021/2022 academic year the Hammer Museum will offer several year-long 9-credit internships (3 credits per quarter) to selected UCLA undergraduate students. The internships will begin in the beginning of the Fall 2021 quarter, and proceed until the end of the spring 2022 quarter. Interns will be selected from a pool of applicants on the basis of academic record and career interest. To receive credit, interns are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours per quarter.
Work will be conducted in accordance with UCLA’s COVID-19 policies. Applicants must be available to report to work in person but may not need to do so until onsite work resumes.

Communications Intern, Online Video Management and Distribution
The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with organizing, writing, and inputting descriptive content about videos for the Hammer’s online video platforms, which includes the Hammer Channel, a new online video archive of the Hammer’s past public programs recordings and exhibitions videos. Video description is key to effective distribution and access, as there is no text in a video for search engines
to read. Work on the video archive includes editing transcripts, creating playlists, and authoring descriptive metadata such as keyword tags, categories, and descriptions. The intern will also help maintain the Hammer’s YouTube channel by managing uploads, metadata, and creating playlists, and will assist with selecting and preparing short video excerpts from Hammer past programs that are shared weekly on our social media channels. The intern will learn about content strategy for video, and how video supports an overall communications strategy as well as archival and research goals. They will also learn about the mechanics of online video distribution, search engines, and website content management.
Communications Intern, Video Production
The intern’s responsibilities will be to assist with video production, by putting their creative skills to work in multiple areas of the production process. They will work closely with the communications team to execute compelling videos that promote the Hammer and its exhibitions and programs. Work includes assisting the team with research, hands-on assistance during shoots, editing, and platform management. The intern will be exposed to many of the key skills needed for a career in video production. Key responsibilities include:
+ Research topics in video archives, the internet, library archives and others sources.
+ Learn about the museum’s guidelines and standards, and apply these to the production of video content that is shared on online channels and social media.
+ Provide assistance as needed to all hands-on components of video productions, including sound, lighting, camera, editing and postproduction.
+ Assist with the purchasing of supplies, props, and equipment.
+ Maintain all video equipment in optimal conditions, ensuring equipment is charged and properly stored before and after every shoot.
+ Be responsible for the safe transfer and storage of all footage.
+ Help maintain the Hammer’s online video channels by uploading videos and inputting metadata.
Communications Intern, Social Media, Digital Marketing, Outreach
The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with social media, digital marketing, and UCLA and

Westwood outreach. They will also assist with public relations efforts and targeted outreach for exhibitions and programs. The intern will help maintain the Hammer’s social media accounts—Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest, among others—website, and event listings. They will also research media outlets, update press lists, and staff press events. The intern will learn how to develop communications strategy, content strategy, and marketing plans. They will assist the communications team with additional tasks as needed. This internship will also be open to students outside of the Art History department.
Design Internship
The Design Intern’s primary responsibilities include assisting with design production and coordination, documentation of completed projects, as well as designing for digital and print projects. The intern will learn how to work within an in-house design team, track projects from start to finish, and assist the design team with additional tasks as needed. The internship will focus on supporting the museum’s academic and public programs, with potential to assist design staff on exhibitions. Successful candidates will be proficient in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Familiarity with the full Adobe Creative Suite is strongly preferred. All candidates must submit a design portfolio.
