Department of Art Assistant Professor of Ceramic Art
Starting Date: August 2020
Minimum Qualifications:
1) An earned M.F.A. in Art with an emphasis in Ceramics or an M.F.A. in Ceramics.
2) Evidence of successful college teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
3) Evidence of an ability to teach a broad range of courses in ceramics ranging from pottery to sculpture.
4) Evidence of a skilled contemporary ceramic art practice with an active exhibition record.
5) Evidence of an ability to supervise a ceramics facility and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
1) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the graduate level.
2) Demonstrated expertise in hand building, wheel throwing, mold making, glaze formulation, and firing techniques.
3) Demonstrated knowledge of the multi-cultural history of ceramic art with an emphasis on contemporary issues.
4) Two years of teaching experience post M.F.A. at the college or university level.
5) Evidence of successful experience overseeing part-time faculty, teaching associates, student assistants, and staff.
Duties:
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
Candidates will teach a wide range of subjects in ceramic art at all levels. These teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars in Studio Art. The successful candidate will be responsible for the supervision of the ceramics facility and equipment, including electric and gas kilns, spray booths, potter’s wheels, and a glaze room that offers a full range of chemicals and raw materials.

Salary:
Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department/Division/School:
The Department of Art offers the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees, and 700 majors are currently enrolled. The Department is the largest in the College, and is home to the ninth largest major in the University. There are fifteen full-time faculty and 30 lecturers. Cal State L.A. has maintained NASAD accreditation since 1974.
