Juried exhibition – Greater Los Angeles Master of Fine Arts (GLAMFA) Exhibition

The graduate students at CSU Long Beach have hosted the Greater Los Angeles Master of Fine Arts (GLAMFA) Exhibition since 2005. In the past, it has functioned as a juried survey of Southern California MFA students. At this point, there are several similar annual exhibitions. Last year, we felt inspired to move beyond a juried “Best of Show” presentation, and instead created a conversation amongst Southern California MFA students and our practices. This year we are happy to continue GLAMFA 2020 in this direction in hopes to foster a community of artists interested in collaboration.

If you are interested in being a part of our January 2020 GLAMFA: Double Play exhibition:

  • Please include a brief paragraph describing your current work/practice.
  • List artists or movements you respond to or are interested in (if any).
  • Please include 3 images of current work – only so that we can get a sense of languages you are utilizing. These are not formal submissions, but rather samples that we can use to help facilitate collaborative relationships for the GLAMFA exhibition.
  • A link to your artist website/social media.

We are aware that people’s participation will be varied and secondary to current MFA work. We are hoping for a range of conversation – be it through physical meetings with students from other Southern California institutions, image and text sharing, or social/political or other dialogues that develop through the curatorial process.

Some possible groupings we have imagined so far (and certainly not limited to) are:

  • Thematic compatibility
  • Response pieces or duets
  • Process-oriented practices that can develop cohesively
  • Open works in which another artist could “finish,” install, or develop further.
  • Direct collaboration between students from different schools

We welcome involvement ranging from stand-alone pieces to full installations in one of our several gallery spaces during exhibition time. We have a little over a week for installation to occur.
This is an invitation to MFA students to collaborate with their Southern California artist community. We invite you to partake in any way that is comfortable and fruitful for your practice. Once we have participants secured, we will have monthly check-ins – mainly to help us plan for the exhibition, etc.

We plan to use one gallery space for the return of the shared resources room, designed to share printed material such as readings (theory, poetry, anything!), audio and visual material (podcasts, recorded lectures, film) and anything else that has fed your practice and may be beneficial for your contemporaries. While we may receive some of the same information in our different programs, it’s likely that our schools have differing theoretical approaches, and we’d like to provide a space to explore and share that knowledge.

If you are interested in participating, please follow the link below and supply the requested information.
