Witness, the literary journal published by the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, is seeking photo essay submissions for its “Abandon” issue, which appears in print in spring 2018. The deadline for submissions is September 1.
Each submission should include at least 8 images. Payment for the cover photo and essay set is $400 and the submission fee is $5. Witness is also reviewing submissions for its non-themed issues to be published online in July and November. Please visit Submittable for more details. And here is the prompt for “Abandon”:
The inscription on Dante’s gate. A cry to jump ship. Freedom from inhibition. “Abandon” is a multi-faceted active state, charged with both loss and possibility. We invite you to stand at the threshold and release your stories of leaving and never returning, the fear and exhilaration in letting go, or the wildness that defies any form of restraint. Give us work that starts from the cleanest, untethered slate, scenes perched on the precipice of departure, and subjects shaken loose from familiarity.
